The film's opening scene is in the ocean, beginning with the submarine "Sevastopol". The submarine was carrying the most powerful computer in the world. Access to the computer requires a unique, two-part, cross-shaped key. This sets the scene for the plot of the rest of the film. A new IMF agent comes to meet Ethan Hunt and gives him his mission log while posing as a delivery person. Eugene Kittridge, director of the IMF, gives Ethan the task and tells him about the key and how it's being used for something possibly fatal. Kittridge talks with the heads of several intelligence services. The Entity, a quickly self-learning and intelligent computer system, is reported to have been involved in various attacks on networks, including the Russian sub. They believe that because The Entity cannot be eliminated, controlling it is their best option. The IMF group arrives at the airport with the mission of finding the key. By interfering with their video monitoring, Ethan is able to lead them astray with the help of Benji and Luther. Ethan ends up following Grace, a person who has stolen the other half of the key. Grace is captured by the police in Rome after Ethan follows her there. She was caught with several fake passports and identities that are wanted all over the world for various theft charges. Ethan plays the role of her attorney and discovers that Grace was employed by an unidentified third party to obtain the other half of the key.
The third party was Alanna Mitsopolis, who was also the host of the big party that Grace had planned on attending. Grace is discovered at the gathering by Gabriel, who then takes her to Alanna Mitsopolis. Knowing that Alanna has the second key piece and was the one who hired Grace to find the other half, Ethan and Ilsa discover them as well. Grace breaks away from the team and escapes through the streets before being caught up by Gabriel beside the canal. Ethan starts to rush in her direction, but The Entity impersonates Benji to divert him. Paris finds him, engages in combat with him, and loses, but Ethan decides to spare her life. When Ilsa discovers the two, she fights Gabriel in combat, which leads to Gabriel killing Ilsa. Since Ilsa left, Ethan arrived too late. Grace, who is feeling regret about Ilsa's passing, joins Ethan, Benji, and Luther. The new strategy is to follow Alanna as she boards the Orient Express to meet with a prospective buyer for the key. Benji creates a mask for Grace to wear so she can pretend as Alanna, but when he tries to create one for Ethan to wear so he can pose as her brother, the mask machine breaks down, leaving Ethan to come up with a new strategy to board the train. Ethan is unable to use his motorcycle to board the train, so he must carefully time his parachute drop and jump from a cliff. Grace then encounters Kittridge, the buyer of the key. Following this, While Jasper and Degas are also aboard the train and pursue Gabriel, Ethan pursues Gabriel. After a long fight between Ethan and Gabriel, Gabriel is under the impression that he has the key until he realizes Ethan switched them. The film ends on a cliffhanger with Grace joining the IMF and Ethan staying rogue, foreshadowing the next movie.
The Plot driver of the film would be the key since it is the initial object that progresses the whole film. The film starts off with the machine and then later discovers that the way to unlock all of its secrets is through the two-sided key.
The first of the three main acts of the film is the introduction to the machine itself in the submarine. We are shown its power and the significance that the two-part key holds. We are also introduced to Ethan Hunt and how he is presented with the mission and the option to accept it. Ilsa is the first important female character that we are introduced to in the film. She is part of the IMF team as well.
Second, the first part of the mission falls into place in the airport, where the director introduces us to Grace, the theif. After Ethan and Grace's relationship is established, this act follows Grace being detained in Spain by the government and Ethan hiring a lawyer to bail her out. Still searching for the other half of the key, the next part of the mission plan follows them to Alanna's party.
Third, at the beginning of this act, Gabriel kills Ilsa as a way to get to Ethan. Then the last part of the mission goes into the course of Grace impersonating Alannis on the Orient Express to go through with the dealings with Kittridge.
The main character change I saw in the film was in Grace herself. She started out the film very untrustworthy and betrayed Ethan left and right. As the film went on and her options got more limited, she chose to put her trust in him and join the IMF team. She went from a stranger and a thief that Ethan had nothing to with to someone he was willing to risk his life for.
